
Skopje is the city with a 2000 years old tradition, situated along the Vardar River which divides city into a south and north part. The city that offers rich cultural and natural attractions that is a unique combination of old and new.
Stone bridge ... According to certain data the Stone Bridge of Skopje was built in the 6th century, whereas in its present form it was raised upon the old foundation in the time of the Sultan Murat 2nd in the first half of the 15th century. The bridge connects the old and the new parts of the city
Aquaduct ... Located north-west from Skopje, the aqueduct was built of stone and bricks with 55 arch supported on massive pillars.
According some scientists it was a Roman aqueduct whereas according to others it was a Byzantium building. The last scientific researches connect the building of the aqueduct with Isa bey, which means that it was built during the time of the Turkish rule and more precisely in 16th century.
Aqueducts in former Yugoslavia were only 3, one in FYR Macedonia and two in Montenegro.
Murat Pasha mosque ... Built in 1436. The unusual 3 naves basilica shape and the flat ceiling (instead of domes) comes from the fact that it was built (or adjusted) over St. George monastery, the main monastery in Skopje before the coming of the Turks. It stands on a plateau next to the clock tower. The fortifications of the monastery still stand around the plateau.
Marko's monastery ... Located outside Sushica village on Kitka Mountain. It was founded by king Volkashin in 1345 and finished by his son King Marko in 1366, who is also the donor of the frescoes painted between 1366 and 1371. It is unknown why the monastery is built in the vicinity of Skopje instead of Prilep the capital of their medieval kingdom. It is presumed that the grave of king Marko is here but it was destroyed by the Turks.
Clock tower ... This monument is located on the "Krste Petkov-Misirkov" street, on a hill behind the "Sts. Cyril & Methodius University". It is a Turkish object, built east of the famous and oldest market place of Skopje, Bitpazar. It stands in the forecourt of Hjuncar - the mosque of Sultan Murat 2nd. It has a hexagonal foundation and has a different rooftop which resembles the numerous lateral domes of the new Moscow style of the Russian medieval architecture. This element had been previously employed by Mongolians.
Kale fortress ... Kale fortress has the dominant place in Skopje. It was built of stone blocks from the ruins of the city of Scupi, during the rule of the Byzantium Emperor Justinijan the 1st.
Ohrid is Macedonia’s largest summer tourist destination and historical-cultural center as well. The new, modern Ohrid, with the old part creates a synthesis between the past and the future. The old part represents a citadel and contains many cultural-historical monuments that attract the eyes of the tourists.
The Ohrid Lake is considered to be one of the oldest lakes and biotopes in the world, preserving a unique aquatic ecosystem with more than 200 endemic species that is of worldwide importance. Located in south-western Macedonia, a region with great historical and cultural value the Ohrid lake and the region have great importance (World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1979). It is primary destination for tourists during the entire year.
Ancient Theatre ... This is a theatre from the Hellenistic and the roman period.
It is located in the ancient part of Ohrid, Varoš, in the area of High Kale and Upper Saraj on Ilindenska Street. The object is on 4000 square meters. The theatre is a place was many cultural manifestations are held, including the Ohrid Summer Festival that is held here every year.
Bay of Bones museum Ohrid ... Ohrid was enriched with another cultural and historical landmark as well as with a tourist attraction - Museum on Water - an exceptional archaeological complex, which is one of a kind in the region.
On the southern coast of Gradiste Peninsula in the Bay of Bones, a pile-dwelling settlement has been erected, which in the past was spreading at a total surface of 8.500 m2. It is an authentic reconstruction of a part of the pile-dwelling settlement, dating back between 1200 and 700 BC.
Bargala old town Stip... Bargala is located south-east of Stip, by the Bregalnica river.
Last archeological researches, discovers that the period of late antique and the early Christian period was fill out with plenty monuments. The late Roman period was in a good mood in the place of Bargala and the region of the river Kozjak. In the 4th and 5th century AD, Bargala became important and well known strong cultural and religious center.
Barala was spread on 5 hectares of land. It was protected by a walls with height of 2,2 meters. The Christian complex is contained by a 4 basilicas, 3 big and 1 small. Also there was a residence for the episcope.
Krusevo old town ... As the city was started from scratch, the Vlachs were willing to invest and the Mijaks were excellent builders, in Krusevo a very interesting architecture has developed.
The houses are freestanding, mostly symmetrical, without open spaces typical for other towns in Macedonia. The back of the houses are built of stone, while the front of socalled bondruk construction of wooden columns and beams covered with white plaster. There is almost always a well in the ground floor.
Stobi old town Veles ... Stobi was first mentioned in the year of 197 BC by Livius. According to him, Stobi is located on the flow of river Crna into Vardar, where Philip 5th king of Macedonia, defeated the Dardanians. According the archeologists Stobi was founded during Hellenistic period. In 148BC Macedonia was turned into a Roman province. Stobi develops during the period of Augustus (31 BC-14 AD). Stobi was given a status as municipal salt in 69 AD and got it’s city coins - Municipium Stobensium.
Devina Kula (Tower) Mak. Brod ... Devina Kula was built in the vicinity of the cave Pesna. Here also may be found remnants of the town's walls which were, according to legend, built by the young girl Pesna, sister of the hero Krale (King) Mark .
Saint Gjorgi church Kumanovo ... It is believed that the church was built in 1313, although it has been ascertained that it was erected on the fundaments of an older sacral structure dating from the 11th century and built, according to the tradition, by the Byzantine Tzar Roman IV Diogenes (1067-1071). The year 1313 was imprinted on an inscription over the western entrance door and another inscription located on the southwest wall ascertains that the frescoes were painted in 1317-18.
Holy Mother of God church Bitola ... Holy Mother of God church (Sveta Bogorodica/Virgin Mary) is a small basilica church built in 1870. This church is a triple flight church with an octagonal cupola on the west side. Under the west entry (door) there is a magnificent iconostasis made by a master woodcarver from Mijak.
