Nightlife

Is nightlife in Croatia great? Yes! Beer is cheap, baristas shake up the latest cocktails, DJs spin the latest sounds, and music ranges from Slavic to soul, rock, electronica, jazz, world and beyond. You could just nurse your tan after a hard day at the beach but you don't have to. There are plenty of nightcrawls you can do: trawl the Irish pubs, raves, cocktail bars, rock clubs and discos for a start. Just follow the migratory patterns of Croatians. When everybody is hard at work in winter, nightlife in big cities like Zagreb, Split, Rijeka and Zadar is in full swing while the islands slumber. When the weather warms up and urbanites head to the islands, island clubs and discos explode into action and the big-city hotspots wind down. Summer nightlife really takes off on Hvar and Pag Islands.

So, what's the Croatian club zone like? As a rule, after-dark lifeis fairly relaxed. There are a few strut-your-stuff scenes with VIProoms, ropes, glaring bouncers et al. but for the most part, it'scome-as-you-are and the cover is a reasonable 30 to 40HRK. In thebigger cities, some of the most cutting-edge music, art and fashionis served up in multi-purpose cafe-bar-clubs open from noon untilmidnight. Otherwise, as elsewhere, dance clubs don't really get goinguntil 'round midnight.

Here is a guide to the best nightlife in Croatia by region.

Zagreb

Here's where you'll find the greatest variety of nightlifefrom local drinkers' pubs to big, flashy discos. The scene is hottestfrom September to June and quiets down considerably in the summer.Bars, cafes, clubs, discos, pubs, live music; determined nightcrawlers need never be bored by Zagreb nightlife. You have the Upper Town with the sinuous, bar-lined Tkalciceva street (see a video) and the Lower Town with Bogoviceva and Trg Preradovica plus the Branimir Centre across from the train station. Then you have Out-of-Town down by Jarun Lake and south of the Sava river (where a car is most convenient).

For the most part, the vibe is pretty relaxed in Zagreb clubs. Menacing bouncers, ruthlessly selective door policies and watery cocktails have not yet made inroads onto the scene. There are a few clubs where you're expected to show up in movie-star fashion but they are a definite exception. The cover runs from about 30 to 50KN. Drinks are about the same.

The nightlife season is Zagreb runs from September to June. In the summer locals head to the coast, especially to Novalja on Pag Island.

Kvarner

The nightlife in Kvarner is so goodthat many Zagreb residents head to the sea just to party. Maybe that'swhy Kvarner nightlife rocks. The two best places are Rijeka for a good pub-crawl off-season and Novalja on Pag Island for wild, electronicbeach parties in the summer.

Split

The tanned, toned good looks of the Split populationare all on display in the city's slick discos. There's also a laid-backstudent-y vibe in the Old Town.

Everything you could wish for to while away your summer nights, you'll find in Split. Split locals party with Mediterranean abandon and then rinse away the night's devilry on the beach. The two main hotspots are Diocletian's Palace and the Bacvice complex a couple of kilometres east of town in the Bacvice neighbourhood.

Within the Diocletian palace walls new bars, cafes and hangouts are constantly slipping in and out of fashion while the Bacvice complex houses a panoply of restaurants, clubs, and bars and overlooks Bacvice beach.

Dubrovnik

There are some discos and informal clubs but there'salso a lot more at the ritzy end of the range.

For some, it's splendid enough to sip a coffee or beer on Stradun and watch the twinkling lights illuminate the ancient stones. There's no better place than the landmark Gradska Kavana near the Rector's Palace. Everyone seems to wind up here one way or another, relaxing on the terrace and enjoying the view.
Romantic Bars

But perhaps you're looking for a view over the water? Something romantic? In that case, Cafe Buza, is your kind of place. It's outside the city walls and your table is only steps from the water. (Look for the 'Cold Drinks' sign on the southern walls). There's probably no better view in the Adriatic of a sunset over the sea.
Irish Bars

Dubrovnik had never been known for it's wild nightlife but the situation has much improved. Irish-style pubs are the latest fad and you'll find three in the Old Town: Pub Karaka and The Gaffe Pub are the original pub-style bars with pub grub, Guinness, Ale and UK matches on the giant telly. Now there's Katie O'Connors which replaced a tapas bar and attracts a slightly more sedate set than the other Gaelic watering holes.
Cocktail Bars

Then, there's Nonenina Cocktail Bar, a classier scene and one several bar-cafes on Gundulic square catering to the cocktail set. Nearby is Mirage Caffe-Bar, another relaxed hangout. Other cocktail bars include the ever-lively East West Club on Banje beach where the fruity drinks and sunset have the same colours. Artsy types gather at Talir on Antuninska which is decorated with the work of local artists. It's especially popular during Dubrovnik's summer festival.
Local Bars

Most of the above places are a little too spendy for the locals who tend to cluster at smaller places tucked into the back streets. Africa on Vetroniceva street attracts a very young set. Casablanca on Zmanjina, Carpe Diem on Svetoga Josipa and Fresh also on Vetroniceva are current favourites of students and recent students.
Discos

If you prefer to drink & dance, try Latino Club Fuego Brsalje 2, just outside Pile Gate. Despite the name the music runs a gamut of styles. For the full throbbing disco experience, head to Exodus Iva Dulcica 39 in Babin Kuk. If that's too far, check out the DJs spinning electronica at Lazareti, the former quarantine just outside the east walls. Dance till you drop and then go crash on Copacabana beach. Big spenders cluster in the super-slick Labirint Sv Domenika 2 with a casino, restaurant, disco and nightclub. Dress up. A younger, more casual set rules the Nightclub and Cocktail Bar Revelin on top of the medieval fortress. The Factory Club on Put Republike is open all year, unlike the other clubs, and offers an eclectic, changing program of local and guest DJs.
Music Bars

Chances are that at some point, everyone will wind up at Troubadur Buniceva 2 (near Gundulic square) to toss back a brew and soak up a unique ambience. Marko, the owner, is a jazz lover and makes sure that his passion is fulfilled every night with a changing array of groups. It's friendly, relaxed and has been a fixture on the Dubrovnik night scene for decades.

Istria

Although most of Istria's towns have a few bars &clubs, the best nightlife in Istria is in Pula but you'll have to go out of town for it.

Pula's nightlife is definitely the best in Istria even if the nighttime options are less varied than in Zagreb or Rijeka. Unlike those two big cities, downtown Pula has very little going on at night; most of the action is in Verudela or Premantura. (see a Pula map). Here's a rundown of Pula's hottest nightlife.

Zadar

Very local, adventurous and dynamic, it's worth a tripto Zadar just to go out at night. Plus, most of the best clubs areconcentrated in the historical centre making clubbing a breeze.

Zadar has great nightlife--unpretentious and varied-and the best part is that most Zadar nightlife is located in the town's historic centre. As soon as the winter chill leaves Zadar's streets, the city's teeming population of students fill outdoor cafes and spill out of its bars. There are a couple of super-hip nightclubs but the biggest disco on the Croatian coast, Saturnus, is about 16km northwest of Zadar in Nin.

Hvar

Do the words Carpe Diem mean anything to you? Hvar's chic-est club is attracting party people from the world overincluding the two Hilton sisters. There are a few less-exalted placesbut generally you'll want to dress up to live it up.
The intricately carved Venetian architecture and wide, welcoming seaside promenade of Hvar Town has helped make Hvar Island the chicest and most visited of southern Dalmatian islands. It's a top sight in Croatia and one of the country's most romantic spots. By day, excursion boats head out to one of the pine-wooded offshore Pakleni Islands of Stipanska or Jerolim where naturists have their own private coves.

Hvar is hot now and I don't mean the temperature. From yachties to movie stars to gap year Aussies, everyone comes to Hvar. Consequently it is one of the more expensive towns in Croatia and in the height of the summer season it is a real scene

For nightlife, you can't do better .At night, the sleek and chic relax in one of the harbourside bars, sipping tropical cocktails and comparing tans. Off-season, Hvar quiets down considerably and if you head to Jelsa or Stari Grad you'll find a less hectic pace.
